An article in the January/February 2021 issue of Presbyterian Today said it best: “Mission came first, then a building”.
Since eight retirees met in a private home to discuss the need for a Presbyterian church in the north Georgia mountains, lack of real estate had not created a barrier for the church to meet it’s mission to worship and serve. In fact, without a permanent “home”, Faith was recognized as “one of the fastest-growing congregations in Cherokee Presbytery”.
However, by 2016, the members of Faith could see that lack of physical facilities was limiting its ability to grow in mission. Attendance at worship exceeded the reasonable and comfortable capacity of our rented church. Our ability to host community education and service programs exceeded our physical capacity. Faith had become known for being a willing host to other organizations with missions akin to our own such as Trout Unlimited, Red Cross Blood Banks, Habitat for Humanity and the Blue Ridge Jewish Community.
In a leap of faith and an unexpected opportunity to purchase nine acres of land, Faith acquired its first “hard” property. Soon thereafter the planning for the new church building on Bluebird Road began.
Today, we have a beautiful property and building that allows us to expand our service to the community.
We invite you to visit our home and consider how our “facilities” might assist you in walking your own faith journey.
The sanctuary at Faith was designed quite intentionally to be flexible and welcoming. As you enter, you will be struck by the “openness” and light. We do not have stained glass windows. While beautiful in their art, stained glass windows restrict the view of the surroundings – and that is where our mission is focused. Depending on the time of day, you will see the brilliant promise of a new day dawning or the pastoral glow of day’s end.
Our “pews” are comfortable, individual seats which allow us to provide for intimate discussion groups or up to 200 worshippers in more traditional rows. The 2600 square feet of unobstructed floor space becomes a welcoming place for congregational meals or community events.
A choir “loft” accommodates up to 30 singers and a state-of-the-art sound system assures that everyone can enjoy the music.
The classroom/library at Faith hosts the many meetings of groups that keep Faith vibrant as well as outside organizations. Dependent upon the arrangement of chairs and tables, the classroom can easily provide space for 30 attendees.
Second only to the sanctuary, the modern industrial kitchen in our new building was a “must have” in our design. Many of our service projects and congregational gatherings call for feeding large numbers of people. In the past, we had to rely upon outside preparation of meals and limited ability to keep foods warm. Today, we can prepare meals “in house” and have generous refrigeration and storage capacity.
Faith has long had a vegetable garden that provides produce to the local food bank. The generosity of a local landowner allowed us to plant a limited garden each year for that purpose. Today the vegetable garden in on our own campus and will allow for needed future expansion.
Our memorial garden provides a quiet, serene area to sit and remember those who are no longer physically with us. The trees, the breeze and the sounds of nature call us to relax and clear our minds of the pressures and distraction of daily life. We also have ground for the spreading of the ashes of loved ones.
